Album Review: Great Lake Swimmers - Caught Light

Veteran Canadian alt-rockers Great Lake Swimmers cast excesses from the recording process to cut an album stylishly layered and right on the mark. Awash with mesmeric undertones and primed moments of twang, CAUGHT LIGHT reflects the grandeur surrounding this Juno nominated and in-demand Southern Ontario outfit, who since assembling in the early 2000s have fermented a sound reminiscent of 70s influenced folk rock. In a concoction of Canadian class meets West Coast panache, this outstanding ten track collection instinctively captures the moment.

The constant of the Great Lake Swimmers across nine albums is band leader Tony Dekker as the players rotate around its founder. His pensive vocals are a key feature on a record organic in feel and tenderly understated. From the wonderfully poignant opener ‘One More Dance Around the Sun’ to gracious closer ‘All the Best, barely a foot is out of place. The idyllic rhythm to 'Wrong, Wrong, Wrong' is an endearing feature as is the escalating tone in 'For You to Come Around' blessed with a melodic beat throughout. Nostalgia comes to the fore in 'Youth Not Wasted' as the pace enters a more sedate phase. 'Endless Detours' announces the midpoint arrival with the alluring content intact boosted by a delve into experimentalism and a chorus that embeds deeper with each listen.

The second half kicks off with 'Running Out of Time' heralding a return to the steady beat holding the earlier stages together. Title track 'Caught Light' leans in a more atmospheric direction hooking you into Dekker's softly textured vocals. 'A Distant Star' parades celestial trappings amidst harmony vocals, jangle joy and a track of real thinking quality. Nestled just before the aforementioned closer, 'The Fledgling Jay' heralds a turn in a more roots direction putting the folk into folk rock.

The album originally came out in October 2025 but is getting a UK focussed relaunch to support a 5-date run of shows in May stretching from Brighton on the south-coast to Glasgow north of the border. With a live flavour to how they have been recorded, the songs should shape up well with a real time audience gathered to savour them.

CAUGHT LIGHT is bedecked with regal charm and shines a bright light on what a band does best. Great Lake Swimmers have an omnipresent aura in the context of alt-country/Americana inspired Canadian rock music. Seasoned fans and newbies alike will latch onto the worth of this high quality album.
